Competition was fierce on the track and will be celebrated and commemorated by many long into the future. However, there was more to do at the slam than get your skates on!  The message tree, a Hills hoist clothes line, slowly accumulated a host of personal messages, love notes to wives, and proclamations of a secret derby crush. And it was at this site that the souvenir photo stand appeared each day.

With an array of colourful dress-ups swinging in the breeze, people came, were ‘styled’, and had their GSS experience captured by a photographer. Find yourself or your friends at this link and share the fun that was the GSS!

Add some gold to your dreams: this little beauty is the trophy for the Great Southern Slam. While we’ll all go home with a big fat golden glow, one super skate-hard tournament team will receive this baby into their bruised and battered arms on Sunday, as they are announced as the tournament winner. Currently affectionately referred to as ‘the Golden Roller Thong’, The Great Southern Slam Trophy has been beautifully sculpted by amazing local artist and Adelaide Roller Derby referee Grumpire (aka Vic Waclawik if you wanna commission any work, details below). Wow. Such shiny golden deliciousness.

Do derby girls and boys know how to party?
Better get your late-night shoes ready for the after party of all after parties… the Great Southern Slam after party… the ROLLER DERBY BALL. Think hundreds of rollergirls, zebras and derby lovers taking over a club to dance and love it up until the adrenalin runs out.
The after party starts Sunday June 13, the last day of the tournament. HQ, on the corner of West Terrace and North Terrace, will host this almighty event. Tunes supplied by special guest derby DJs and guest DJs from HQ Saturday’s Dream Team. Before 11pm, come on in for free entry by dressing derby or by showing your Great Southern Slam wristband at the door. Otherwise, it’s $10 from 8pm to 11pm, or $20 after 11pm.
Catch a tram after the last bout, from Goodwood Road, at the southeast corner of the Adelaide Showground, right to the door of HQ.
Uh, yeah, we know how to party.

To make the tournament even more exciting, and to assemble a total of 15 teams for an even schedule, the Great Southern Slam will see an extra team compete: TEAM POT LUCK. Bout-ready skaters not already on the tournament roster, from any participating league, were invited to put their names into a hat for a spot on the Team Pot Luck roster. Fourteen names were drawn to make up a full skating roster, and you can watch the draw here and here. Team Pot Luck will compete like any other team in the tournament, skating to try and make it through to the finals and take out the tournament title. Powers of roller derby combine!

Registration has closed and we expect to be able to announce the
participating leagues very soon. The venue has been booked and some great
accommodation deals organised for visiting skaters. Time to book yourself on
a flight and tell your boss and family you’ll be away for a few days DOING
AMAZING ROLLER DERBY STUFF. And take a moment to get excited while you clean
your bearings: this is just the beginning!
